My current favorite song

I know how silly of me to write about my current favorite song but everytime I hear it on the radio I turn it up and pathetically lipsynch to it (and I really don't know all the words to it).

I liked the song even before I knew about the lyrics. Was it the synthesizer? The beats? The climactic melody? The charged vibe of the song from second one to the last? The singer's nasally-but-confident voice? It's a combination of all of it and some more that I wish I have the talent to express in writing.

This is Rihanna's "Rude Boy" I'm talking about. When I read the lyrics, I was a little shocked but my dropped jaw gave way to a grin. The chorus line is a challenge. Rude boy can you "git it up"? Rude boy, "is" you big enough? You say you a rude boy show me what you got now! LOL I love it.

It is a woman taking back the power of her sexuality - which most might see as being "slutty". What's so slutty of challenging all those "rude boys"? With boldness and candor, she is letting it be known what she wants.

This song is the antithesis of her sugar-sweet Umbrella. Umbrella is star of a song , that shines so beautifully on its own. But Rude Boy is like the mysterious, unknown edges of an event horizon surrounding a black hole, where no starlight dare cast their shine through. Like Taboo. Rihanna lyrically brought something that some might find uncomfortable to bring up - sex and the male organ strongly connected to their easily bruised ego.

The video is funky. I lack the technical knowledge but funky-retro is all I could think of. It's urban just like Umbrella but in a more street-cred kind of way. Where Umbrella reigned in being smooth and polished came "Rude Boys" rough edginess. The Lion Of Judah depicted in a Windows-paint-like drawing is a nice tribute and it nicely tied it with her rasta colored tassle skirt :D. She's experimenting more with wearable art than before as well. There are so many obseravations I want to rave about but it's getting late and I want to go recharge for tommorrow (Friday yay!)

It's amazing to know that she's not even 25. She is a great artist who took bold steps outside the box that the industry and the market want to stuff her in. This is a good move Rihanna :) Thank you for the art that is Rude boy. I should buy your latest album hehehe.
