I'm not a fan of the arena...because of all the other non-musical stuff that's associated with it such as some big laser screen etc etc...it takes away from the the reason of what I was there for - to enjoy the music. Mayer does not need all of these fancy crap :D
The show last night was awesome , I just can't help but miss the times I've seen him in non-arena venues and when the tickets were more affordable
..he opened with Heartbreak Warfare (great arena song)...a little dramatic too because you first see his big shadow on this guaze-y curtain then you hear the first chords and the curtain parts to reveal him... then closed with Why Georgia.
He has "Chuwariwaps" now ..two great women who offers their vocal support .
....he has some great jamming momens with Steve Jordan.
It was pretty refreshing to see John Mayer just hold the mic and sing with his guitar hanging of his side in some parts of Assasin.
...it sucked to be in a section with parents chaperoning their teenaged kids and then complaining to the arena crew when people are standing up and his daughter could not see the show....then stand the F up! ...
I enjoyed the show ... I should know better to appreciate the ambiance of an arena show vs a non-arena show...
...the first part of the show for me was lukewarm...then it got really good but then the show was cut short...it was such a short show for me..
and ok ok , I know I keep bashing his tracks from Continuum but upon ...careful..."reflection" ...hehehe, the tracks in Battle Studies .... does not have the same passion as the tracks of Continuum ...especially live.
..and I should learn to appreciate his live shows at this point of his career and not look for the older times when he only had room for squares ...
...I guess in a way, I am having difficult because just a few days ago, I saw Jamie Cullum at The Fillmore (the same place I first saw John Mayer live) and it is smaller more intimate venue and then Jamie parted the crowd in the middle and went straight for the floor with this band and literally stood 2 feet in front of me and I stood literally between his two band members as they played...(ok, I should post it at a differnt thread hehehe sorry)
..so maybe that was why I was feeling a little disconnect at this ...."glamorous" arena show..
....but he's still great ....funny....he seems more relaxed now and more sure of himself on stage...he does some silly footwork dance and makes it up for his guitar-playing
..I love how he did a little cover for Fleetwood Mac's "Dream", my friend and I can't help but sing along to .....thunder only happens when it's raining..
players..only love you when they're playing...
He even thanked the crowd for say iing that he knew that the tickets to this show was sold out after two days- back in December. He said he knows we've been holding on to this ticket for the past three months and he said he dedicates the show to make for all the bad days from the time the ticket was bought and the show and I just let out a loud...I don't know..woohooo......darn right...I had a rough early 2010 and he's right on the money.
....I think it's awesome that he pulled off some acoustic tracks and still was able to connect with his audience and you said something in the likes of that as well..
....the supporting artist..is Michael Franti and the Spearhead....love their vibe...very "hippie" ..but such great jam band as well...and who does not love his feel good song "Say Hey (I love you)", he called all the young kids up on stage and all of us were dancing and singing to his song (even the parent-dude stood up to dance).
...Franti joined Mayer on stage and ...I must say, Franti has a way of working the crowd ...
and sorry PJ...he didn't play YBIAW last night hehehehe
...so yes, great show...you have to watch it w/o looking for the Old Mayer shows ..you just shouldn't..and appreciate his performance which is still good..his humor, which is still there ...and the great support of the musicians who makes the art all the more beautiful...
k, sorry, I'm all over the place. I hope to the fans in Pinas, take this chance to see him live, and don't be disappointed if he doesn't play a song that you like...just live the show..song by song..note by note...
